Peter raises some excellent points. I got the call seemingly at random. I
think they got my name and info from the Futurist Directory.
I didn't pass on info to them about where this list was hosted, and they
wouldn't be able to post anyway, since it's not open to posting unless
you're a member.
Certainly, though, the things Peter points out do see a bit fishy. (Except
for the email. I've often seen couples who share email addresses, despite
the fact that you can get them for practically nothing, nowadays.)
Caveat Emptor. If anyone else finds out more about this, I'd be curious...

Patrick,
I don't mean to sound suspicious, but:
(1) The web page for Barton Associates has nothing more than a placekeeper
logo - no phone number, no point of contact, no useful information. Isn't
the point in a business having a web site to link people to the company?
(2) The phone number given isn't even in Houston.
(3) If, however, you substitute 713 for 719, then you get an answering
machine for this company. But no returned calls. Isn't the raison d'etre
for a search firm to find people?
(4) The email is from a Tara Flores but is signed Paul Flores.
(5) Coca Cola is headquartered here in Atlanta. Doug Daft, the Chairman and
CEO, lives and works here in Atlanta. So why does the position call for
reporting to the "Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company in New York
City, New York"?
(6) The company data is out of date. Yes, they pulled in operating revenues
of just under $20B last year. But, anyone who lives in Atlanta can tell you
of the massive restructuring (read: layoffs) that have taken place at Coke.
The company now employs closer to 25,000 people than 30,000. Shouldn't a
search company have accurate data about the companies they are
representing?
I could go on, but what's the point? If you know these folks, fine. If not, then
I'd be leery of the bait that they seem to be dangling.

BANNER AD PRICES TAKE A DIP
The cost of placing banner ads on Web sites is finally falling, with the
average price per 1,000 online "impressions" down 5.6% in December 1998 from a
year earlier. "It's a simple example of supply and demand," says the
marketing director at AdKnowledge. "Many more sites are seeking advertising,
so there's a lot more to choose from." Meanwhile, the click-through rate (the
percentage of viewers who actually click on a banner ad to find out more
information) is down as well. According to the CEO at Agency.com, the current
rate is 0.5%, down from 1% a year ago and 2.5% two years ago. "People are
more focused about the use of the Internet. They want to do what they came to
do and they don't want to click on a banner." (Wall Street Journal 24 Feb 99)
